Hi everyone

Since Windows 7 has been released (or RTMed) in stores on October 22nd, I noticed that the Windows 7 News section has been too much calm for me, as there are no more Beta builds leaks etc..

So here I come with some questions:

What is your Windows 7 experience?
Did you have any issues with it?
Do you like it so much that you traded it with your wife?


Here's the topic where you tell us anything you found exciting or not about it!

That opens up a Pandora's box, I have a Toshiba P300 and installed win7 at first with the MS supplied video card drivers and suffered a mess of problems with red vertical lines all over the desk top. several compatibly issues that were resolved with patches and updates from both the vendors and MS. Last week i installed a program called "7Smoker Pro" and didn't that go metal on my poor laptop. I had 10 BSODs in 3 days. I un-installed the program and have had no problem. By and By there are issues win7 but thank god its not Vista.
Q. My Experience with win7?
I like it, Its great to personalize, I have setup a network between my laptop and a desktop computer seamlessly. I have found some tweaks that turn on dream scene and can use my old vista wmv files. I have noticed a drop in values in several different areas !. Battery is up by 16.5%, Voltage has gone from 1.14v to .93v in the CPU Core and the temp has dropped by 5%c. Win7 seem great for laptop and older computers to.. I have seen it run on a Pentium 4 a lot faster than XP. As for Games I love playing graphics enriched games and have found that every game i have installed have worked.

I have been using Win7 since beta as a dual boot with XP and have used XP 3 or 4 times. So the dual boot will be going. I thought Win98se was great - then XP was even better - and Win7 : what can I say.
Installed on desktop and Toshiba A100 no problem - I mainly use music and graphics progs.
(CS2 wouldn't install on vista but no worries on Win7)
The only glitch was using Hotspot Shield - got the BSOD, but on research seems to be a Hotspot problem: So I won't watch John Stewart till I can find a Hotspot replacement.(any ideas?)
As for the wife thing, I don't want this to tun into another Lorena Bobbitt incident

My only problem relates to the really REALLY unintelligent "Windows Device Manager" in RTM (both 32-Bit and 64-Bit versions).  It's undoubtedly the OS because my problems happen on both my Alienware (32-Bit RTM) and my MacBook Pro (64-Bit RTM).  Same problems on both machines with different hardware and drivers. Problems as as follows:

1.  Inserting 500GB External Drive freezes the OS beyond recovery randomly, about once out of every ten attempts, so once per week.

2.  Attempting to "Safely Remove Hardware" throws message "Device is in use" even though no transfers, no windows open and I dont have Anti-Virus installed as it doesn't even connect to the net (my Alienware connects to the net and I have KAV installed on that one, and both machines still have same exact problems).

3.  Conducting large data tranfers (such as my music library 18GBs) will randomly stall the OS beyond recovery whether to the PC, or to the USB.

When I say "beyond recovery", I mean that everything freezes and only the mouse will react...the system clock stops updating, never goes to BSOD, never get Event Logs for errors and I have to hold the power button for 5 seconds for hard reboot.

To abolish speculation...I've had these two USB Western Digital Drives for two years and they've worked excellent with XP SP3 32-Bit and no problems.  When I interact with these USBs in OS X v.10.5.8, no problems ever.

Only other annoyance with Windows 7 is sometimes I'll be doing anything and Aero Transparency will disable itself and I have to re-enable it (again no Event Viewer logs).

Everything else is like a dream, but the issues with USBs is &$^@ing asinine:
1 : extremely or utterly foolish <an asinine excuse>
2 : of, relating to, or resembling an ass

EDIT: Both Windows 7 machines running latest patches, using genuine versions, and both drives were checked with Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List online...forge the link now...

 Very good, any problems I have had were very minor.

Did you have any issues with it?
1.  Majority of my problems were fixed with "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal".
It stopped the freezes on file transfers, fixed DL's that froze at 99%, fixed freezing of "stream Videos".

2.  The hidden Partition on my Acer Laptops caused more problems than anything... even with the EMS disabled in BIOS, many scripts caused the EMS to kick in an restore XP or Vista (which ever ACER) defaulted to.  Fix for that was Set Partition to Active - give a drive letter - Format.

Enjoyed it enough I traded my Wifes " XP Home Premium"  for Windows 7.

The problems I've had with 7 have not been "big" issues. Freezes
have been my problem. Transfering to and  external hard has been
my biggest headache. But found that the sequence and the usb port
that I used contributed to this problem. (Thanks Snuffy for jogging my
membery about this) Am hoping the fix posted will totally elimanate
 this issue. Second issue I had was when I left the computer and the
"turn off the display" time kicked in. Computer completely froze and
the only way I've found to "get it back" was do a ctrl-alt-del and then
 hit cancel when the task mgr option poped up. At first I had thought
the way I activated W-7 was causing these issues, but found out this
was not the cause. And have not been able to determine what has caused
these issues.
Thanks to DR for starting this thread and to Snuffy for jumping in. Yes it has
become way to calm for me too. So am hoping this will start a new learning
process about W-7 and stir up the "minds" we have here at Win7Vista to
produce "knowledge" about W-7 issues and improvements.

For me it has been a very good experience i hated Vista and wouldn't leave XP for it but win7 has been completly different why? I couldn't give anyone a difinitive answer i just love the feel of it. how it works.everything feels smooth and quick without problems yes there have been a couple of tiny glitches but they have been sorted.
I run 64 version and the 32 version on my two machines and have not had any problems at all on either of them. the 32 bit machine is not great spec but it copes very very well with window 7. And the 64 version is a dual boot machine with no problems.

So i am a very happy windows user i think that microsoft did a pretty good job of it. lets hope the next one is even better..................

You are refering to the Always plug your external HDD into the back USB ports.
( found on EBay + free shipping that I coould buy 2 Heavy Duty USB Extension cables for $1.00)
so I added a paperclip holder to the back screws - attached the 2 HD cables so easy to see and get to. Makes it a snap to PNP external USB devices... FIXED for me.. 100%

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I spoke to maxtor and western digital. Both said the sequence
you use is important. They suggest you plug the power cord in first and after the drive "boots up" then plug the usb cable in next. But always in the back usb port. And to be sure the drive has been recognized before using it.

But I still had problems with it freezing. I do believe it has something to do with the actual computer you are using. As I have never had a problem with a Dell, only HP???

Other than this, windows 7 has been a good trade from XP.....

You might go back to the manufacture (mobo) an see if they have updated the USB Drivers.
I found new updated drivers.  6.1.7600.16445 is my pci to host controller, it is set to reserve 20% bandwidth.
you also can chk it to show if your system would be faster or if errors....recommend you set this.

  My understanding is that many systems actually are not using the USB 2.0 or higher drivers.

I have another solution to external usb drives depending on several conditions. IE sata connections.
I love storage and have used external hard drives for 3-4 yrs. My desktop motherboard is 2007 gigabyte and has 1 ide but 6 sata connections. I bought a external hard drive box 2008 Xmas that came with a screw in post that allowed me to connect a esata cord straight to the MB.
Also I bought a Toshiba P300 on the express reason that it had a esata connection.
Put it this way esata=100 meg per second and USB=34 meg per second.
Also win7 then recognizes the external box as a internal drive and the usb ports can be used for other peripherals devices.
I paid 30.00 Aust for the esata external box which comes also with usb connection and cords.

I've been very happy with Windows 7. Obviously Microsoft cocked it right up with Vista to my annoyance after buying that. I went back to XP after giving up on it, then I kept testing each beta build of Windows 7 as they were leaked on a seperate drive. I was really impressed with 7 during this period and was hoping that Microsoft wouldn't balls it up just before release... and to my surprise.. they didn't! At least, not for me anyway. 
Not had hardly any issues to mention really. Only that an old usb video grabber device thing is not supported and that (like others) found copying large amounts of data from one drive to another seems to take longer than XP. Otherwise I am very pleased. I purchased 2 copies of Home Premium on a special price of £44 each on pre-order, and since then purchased 2 Ultimate keys from X420 on here. Well chuffed. As long as I can keep playing my beloved Command & Conquer games I'm happy!

Windows 7 is great, i have been using it since it (beta) was first available and wouldn't think of using anything else.  Except for XP Pro that I have dual booted on 2 pcs.  Only thing I do not like about it is there is no support for some older RAID and ATA133 cards (and onboard) I have.  Realistically that is not a big deal in comparison to how great the "experience" is now.......


Windows 7 is the best  , win7vista makes it better!!

Windows 7 is about the best Microsoft OS that Microsoft have made. It is a glorified version of Vista of course but without all the bugs and glitches and is the only version of Windows that has worked first time without a hundred patches and fixes having to be applied.
It has it's oddities of course, such as all my wifes music seems to find it's way onto my PC and all my photo's are duplicated randomly on hers. (We have a Home network) Both PC's are set not to share media, but take no notice of my instructions. We had this problem with Vista too.
One good thing which Microsoft didn't tell us is that two PC's can use the same licence number, at least they can if they are networked together.
I am an old PC user, helped to invent them back in the early 1970's when I was doing research on the material for the motherboards. Blimey, I have nearly forty years experience of computers.
